Apps that lock your phone until you go to the gym
Lockation, LockedOut, Leave Your House, GymGate — an honest comparison of location-based app blockers for gym accountability.

You want to stop doomscrolling on the couch and actually go to the gym. The idea is simple: lock Instagram, TikTok, and the rest until your phone can prove you have left home. A handful of iOS apps do exactly that. Here is an honest comparison so you can pick the right one.
Quick comparison
| App | Locks while home | Unlocks when you leave | Gym streak / leaderboard | Workout logging | Platform |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GymGate | ✓ | ✓ (GPS geofence) | ✓ | ✓ | iOS (Android soon) |
| Lockation | ✓ | ✓ (GPS) | — | — | iOS |
| LockedOut | ✓ | ✓ (GPS task) | — | — | iOS |
| Leave Your House | ✓ | ✓ (destination GPS) | — | — | iOS |
What these apps actually do
None of them can lock your entire phone. iOS does not allow that for third-party apps. They all use Apple's Screen Time API to block specific apps while keeping phone, messages, maps, and music available. The difference is what happens after the lock kicks in.
Lockation
Pick a location, like home, the gym, or the library, and Lockation keeps chosen apps blocked until GPS detects you have arrived. Simple and focused. Good if you want a general-purpose location blocker without gym-specific features.
LockedOut
Similar idea with a task-completion angle: you set a real-world goal like reaching the gym, and apps stay locked until GPS verifies it. Strong on friction, lighter on ongoing accountability once you are there.
Leave Your House
Locks distracting apps until you reach a destination you set: gym, park, coffee shop. Flexible for any "get out of the house" habit, not built around training schedules or streaks.
GymGate
Built for the gym specifically. Set your training days and a time window; the apps you pick lock while you are home. Leave for the gym and they unlock automatically, or keep them sealed until you arrive if you want the extra push. Once you are training, Rest Mode gives you controlled phone access between sets instead of going cold turkey.
The part the others skip: GymGate tracks your gym streak, logs sessions, ranks you on a leaderboard, and generates shareable stat cards. Skipping a day resets your streak in front of everyone watching. That public stake is the whole point. See how to build a gym streak for why that matters.
Which one should you pick?
- Just need to leave the house? Lockation, LockedOut, or Leave Your House all do the job. Pick whichever UI you prefer.
- Want gym accountability, not just a location lock? GymGate is the only one built around training schedules, streaks, and a leaderboard. It is also the only one with rest-mode blocking between sets.
- Already at the gym but scrolling between sets? That is a different problem. Start with how to stop scrolling at the gym.
Important limitations
- No app locks your whole phone. Essentials always work. These block the distractions you choose.
- You can always uninstall. Every blocker has a cheat path. The ones that stick add stakes. GymGate does that with a visible streak and leaderboard.
- Location permissions required. Geofencing needs background location. All of these apps use low-power region monitoring, not constant GPS polling.
